The Skeleton Coast conjures up mysterious visions of mist-enshrouded beaches strewn with bleached whalebones and rusted shipwrecks. Stretching from the south of Namibia up into Angola, the Skeleton Coast and its hinterland is a landscape of haunting beauty, a vast area of rolling sand dunes, expanses of uninhabited desert plains, fossil beds, unique geological formations, desert-adapted animals and strange vegetation.

As members of the Schoeman family who grew up there, they have the very secrets of the Skeleton Coast etched on their souls and would like to share with you the uniqueness of this remote wilderness. Everything is planned to surprise and delight adventurous souls. They use their own aircraft as a safari vehicle to transport you from one place of special interest to another, flying at “see” level to give you a breathtaking view before you land and explore by Land Rover or on foot.

DAY 1 SKELETON COAST – Huab River Valley

We meet at Eros Airport, Windhoek at 10h00 for departure to the Skeleton Coast via Conception Bay. The Kuiseb canyon and adjoining red dunes are a spectacular view from the air. The flight includes an aerial view of the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck at Conception Bay.
After landing and refuelling at Swakopmund, we continue with a low-level flight north along the Skeleton Coast past the seal colony at Cape Cross for a light picnic lunch near the beach. After lunch we cross the desert by aircraft to the Ugab formations, a nearly lifeless ‘moon landscape’ of numerous black ridges in stark contrast to the white desert floor. From here we proceed to our Kuidas camp in the Huab River Valley where we stay for the night. Ancient rock engravings are found amongst the rocks within walking distance of the camp.

DAY 2 SKELETON COAST – Kunene Region

After breakfast we depart by Land Rover to explore the colorful red lava and yellow sandstone of the Huab River environs and to be introduced to the ecological aspects of this area with its wide diversity of flora and fauna. This includes the Welwitschia Mirabilis, a tree that has been dwarfed by the rigours of the encroaching desert climate. We have lunch at Kuidas camp before flying along the coast to Terrace Bay in the Skeleton Coast Park. The most prominent shipwrecks along this part of the coast are the Montrose and Henrietta.

At the coast we access the roaring dunes by Land Rover, which always proves to be a stimulating experience. We also visit the beach with its profusion of multicolored pebbles consisting of agate, lava, granite and quartz. Interesting to see are old bleached whale bones scattered along the beach above the high tide mark. We return to the aircraft and continue north to our Leylandsdrift camp in the Hoarusib Valley in the Kunene Region, where we stay for the night.

DAY 3 SKELETON COAST – Hartmann Valley

After breakfast we embark on a scenic drive along the Hoarusib Valley to visit a settlement of the nomadic Himba people. We might be lucky enough to come across the desert-dwelling elephant who frequent this valley. From here we continue north along the Skeleton Coast by aircraft to the Kunene River acting as a border to Angola. The Kaiu Maru shipwreck and pieces from old sailing vessels lie scattered along this part of the coast. From the airfield we take a scenic drive by Land Rover to our favorite lunch site. After lunch we continue through the mountains and dunes of the Hartmann Valley – which extends to the Kunene River – reaching our Kunene River camp in the late afternoon.

DAY 4 SKELETON COAST – Kunene Region

Your Skeleton Coast safari ends early this morning with a boat trip on the Kunene River, flowing through scenic desert landscape, observing bird life and possibly some crocodiles. Birds vary from aquatic species on the perennial waters, to endemic desert varieties and those that inhabit dense riverine vegetation. After lunch at the camp, we fly back to Eros Airport, Windhoek, arriving in the late afternoon.

DAY 1 SOSSUSVLEI / SKELETON COAST – HUAB RIVER VALLEY

We meet at Eros Airport, Windhoek at 07h00 for an early morning flight to Sossusvlei in the Namib Naukluft Park. Sossusvlei is reputed to have the highest dunes in the world, and the view of the shadow-lined dunes from the air is well worth seeing. We land at Sesriem from where we undertake an excursion by vehicle into the dunes. The dunes reach heights of 300m or more and for those inclined and fit enough to climb them, this might pose a challenge. We return to the aircraft and fly along the coast via Conception Bay towards Swakopmund. The flight includes an aerial view of the famous Eduard Bohlen shipwreck at Conception Bay.

After landing and refuelling at Swakopmund, we continue with a low-level flight north along the Skeleton Coast past the seal colony at Cape Cross for a light picnic lunch near the beach. DAY 4 ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

An early morning boat trip on the Kunene River as it flows through scenic desert landscape, observing bird life and possibly some crocodiles. Birds vary from aquatic species on the perennial waters, to endemic desert varieties and those which inhabit dense riverine vegetation. After lunch at the camp, we fly directly from the Kunene River to the eastern side of the Etosha National Park, where we spend the night at a lodge outside the park.

DAY 5 YOUR JOURNEY ENDS

Your Sossusvlei, Etosh and Skeleton Coast safari ends as you drive/fly into the park for a final game drive. Springs provide numerous drinking places for the animals, which congregate in spectacular numbers especially during the dry season (June to December). Animals such as lion and steenbok may be found in specific home ranges, while others such as springbok, eland, zebra, wildebeest and elephant wander all over browsing or in search of better grazing. Our flight back to Windhoek commences in the afternoon to ensure that we land before dark.

DAY 1 TRAVEL DAY – TO AFRICA

Your Botswana safari begins today as you board your international flight to Africa.

DAYS 2 & 3 OKAVANGO DELTA

Welcome to Africa! Your Botswana safari continues as you are met at the Maun International Airport off your flight from Johannesburg. You will take a flight to Nxabega Airstrip where a safari vehicle will be waiting to take you to the campsite. Explore the crystal-clear channels, islands and waterways by mekoro (dug-out canoe), and enjoy game viewing walks on the islands. Spend two nights at a private campsite in a private concession area, bordering the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, with a complement of camp staff to cater for your needs.

The highlight of any Botswana safari is the magnificent Okavango Delta, a maze of lagoons, lakes and hidden channels covering an area of over 16,000 square km in flood and shrinking to less than 9,000 square km in the dry season. Trapped in the parched Kalahari sands, this fresh water oasis attracts wildlife that depends on the permanent waters. Sable, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, lion, and elephant, drift through the Kalahari woodlands. This Delta is one of the planet’s most extraordinary wild places and Botswana’s most valuable natural resource.

DAYS 4 & 5 MOREMI GAME RESERVE

Today your Botswana safari takes you on a short flight in a light aircraft will take you to khwai in the north gate region of Moremi Wildlife Reserve. The first protected area in Africa to be established by local people, the Reserve is rated as Africa’s most beautiful wildlife sanctuary. Spend two nights camping in the reserve, with extensive and interpretive game-drives taking up your days.

DAYS 6 & 7 CHOBE NATIONAL PARK – SAVUTE

Enjoy a long game drive (5 – 6 hours overland) as you transfer to Savute, renowned for lion and other predator viewing, where you will spend two nights camping next to the Savute Channel. Huge animal concentrations are attracted to this area and its artificial watering holes in the dry season.

Chobe National Park, another highlight of this Botswana safari, encompasses 11,700 km2 of wilderness, bordered in the north by the beautiful Chobe River, and buffered on all sides by wildlife management areas and forest reserves, allowing for the free movement of game. A wildlife enthusiast’s dream, Chobe National Park is one of the top wilderness reserves in the world and is home to the largest single concentration of elephant. Two species of region-specific antelope occur here, the puku and the Chobe bushbuck, which cannot be seen in other parts of Botswana except on the Chobe riverfront.

DAYS 8 & 9 CHOBE NATIONAL PARK – SERONDELA

From Savute, move up to northern Chobe (4 – 5 hours overland game drive) where you will camp for two nights in the Serondela area of the National Park. This is the heart of elephant country and you may spend many hours watching the huge herds in and around the waters of the Chobe River on game drives or private boat cruise. Northern Chobe is renowned for its large variety of bird and animal life, beautiful scenery and magnificent sunsets.

DAY 10 VICTORIA FALLS

Take a short drive from Chobe National Park to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe for your one night stay at The Elephant Camp, after a tour of the Falls (entrance fee to the Falls is included in the safari fare). Enjoy a sunset cruise along the banks of the Zambezi River and view the spectacular scenery that is nature’s own sanctuary and home to the ‘laughing hippos’, ‘singing birds’ and the ‘snapping crocodiles’. This tranquil cruise offers exceptional photographic opportunities and delightful canapés and sundowners to toast the glorious African sunset. The Elephant Camp also offers close interaction with wildlife – in particular elephant at the Wild Horizons Sanctuary. All guests staying at The Elephant Camp will have an opportunity to meet the Wild Horizons elephants.

Considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is knows as Mosi-oa-Tunya in Zambia and means the Mist that Thunders. The falls are some of the largest in the world and will leave you awestruck by their power and beauty.

This Adventure Camping Kenya Safari includes road transfers from Nairobi and a one way flight from Nairobi Wilson to the Masai Mara. All game drives are in 4×4 vehicle from the camp. Spend 3 nights in the Selenkay Conservancy followed by 3 nights in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy. Selenkay Conservancy is in the Amboseli eco-system and Ol Kinyei Conservancy is a very exclusive wildlife reserve in the Mara eco-system, teeming with animals including over 30 lions and 8 leopards.

This camping kenya safari has been designed to offer the same high quality wildlife safari experience provided by the top-end kenya safari camps, with 4×4 game viewing escorted by top class guides and in exclusive wildlife conservancies away from the tourist minibuses, but at a hugely reduced price by staying in small basic adventure camps, “real camping” instead of the luxury accommodation of the expensive up-market tented lodges.

The adventure camp operates from January 01 to April 10 and July 1 to October 31, 2012 with daily departures from Nairobi, using a minibus shuttle between Nairobi and the Selenkay camp, flying to Mara and back from Mara by road in minibus shuttle.

Activities: Activities on this South Africa, Vic Falls & Botswana safari include mokoro excursions (canoe), bush walks, motor boat sunset cruises. No vehicles are at this camp. The area tends to be in flood July-October. Outside this period boating can be more limited and the emphasis leans towards walking.
Optional unique feature offered includes island camping: pack your mokoros with basic camping equipment and food so that you can set out with your own personal guide to find an island where you will set up camp. The evening will be spent preparing dinner around the campfire in the company of Africa’s nocturnal wildlife (island camping needs to be booked prior to your arrival at the camp).
Wildlife: On this Botswana safari you will be in the rich wildlife area of the Okavango Delta. The Okavango Delta is home to a large number of species, including semi-aquatic species, such as the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga. Families of hippo hide in the deeper channels and lagoons, while the unique Delta environment supports many minute but beautiful species, including multicolored frogs and incandescent dragonflies. The area is much less about intense game-viewing, but more about a gentler Okavango experience.

About the Okavango Delta
The Okavango is a vast river that never meets the sea. Instead, its clear waters spread across the Kalahari Desert, forming Africa’s largest wetland. The Delta is an oasis amidst the vast plains and pans of the desert that covers most of Southern Africa. Its waterways are a collection of meandering channels, creating a haven for Africa’s most notable wildlife. The Okavango Delta is a highlight of any Botswana safari.
